Friday morning and I was at Dinefwr Home farm showing our wares to Robin from Good Life a renewable energy company . Later in the morning he was very kindly showing me his latest install a few miles down the road at Aberglasnley. Aberglasney is one of the big three in Carmarthenshire (Dinefwr, Aberglasney and the National Botanical garden of Wales…worth a weekend!). The stunning site is now the proud owner of a really nice NIBE 70kw open loop lake based heat pump. This was a nice and simple looking system to provide the hot water and heating for the house and my first ever Ninfarium. Then we get the to ‘air battery’ bit a really nice and simple system added on to the lake based heat pump.
Once the ambient air temperature is 2c or higher than the lake the heat pump then takes its heat from the air. To the side of the house is what looks like a normal but big air source heat pump but is in fact a simple heat exchanger with a fan on it (no compressor) the whole thing is controlled by the main heat pump in the house. Simple and ingenious. they can also run in parallel if a heavy heat load is required. I now have a world of questions having gone away to think about it but I do like the simplicity. Wonder if Tredegar House with its shallow lake could learn a thing or too…lets see!
