National Trust Environmental Standard for Parks and Gardens

Those of you who regularly follow the blog will remember that Keith and I have been working with our gardens teams across Wales in order to assess our operations in line with the “National Trust Environmental Standard for Parks and gardens”.

National Trust Environmental Standard for Parks and Gardens 2012

The previous blog “How does your Garden Grow?” outlined the framework that the trust has developed to improve the sustainability of our garden operations using Bronze / Silver / and Gold levels of assessment.

The results of the environmental assessment of all gardens and parks operations across the National Trust in Wales are now completed with National Trust Wales achieving accreditation against the requirements of the standard to “Bronze”

The ownership of the system lies with the gardeners themselves, and they will ensure the levels are achieved and maintained across all properties by internally auditing each others property operations against the requirements of the standard.

This has not simply been a case of us saying we are great – the gardeners set themselves a stretching “pass” mark of 85%, and every garden operation has work to carry out over the next 12 months in order to maintain the accreditation. This work is now underway to ensure that continual environmental improvement is achieved.

A huge well done to our Gardens teams for leading the way in providing practical examples of sustainability in operation.
